This is an introductory class suited for those interested in keeping bees or those just interested in honey and honey bees. Two in class and one field session

March 7 topics will include;

The historic and current state of the bee industry and what it is like to keep bees

  • A demonstration of various equipment types and materials used in beekeeping
  • Basic bee biology
  • How to maintain a bee colony

March 14 topics will include;

  • Honey- tasting, benefits and myths, harvesting honey and other bee products
  • Overwintering bees in Northern Michigan
  • Making queens and growing your apiary

May 9, 1-2:30 pm; Field experience at Forest Apiaries

We will open and inspect various hives and demonstrate some management techniques. Protective bee wear is mandatory for this session.
