A proposed constitutional amendment to significantly change the way Michigan voters elect federal and certain state office holders will likely be on the November 2026 general election ballot. Advocates say that “ranked choice voting” would produce winners with the broadest support. Opponents strongly disagree, arguing that a majority would be manufactured rather than a true mandate. Maine, Alaska, Minneapolis, San Francisco and New York City use that process now and some Michigan cities would too if the amendment is approved. Scott LaDeur, Ph.D., NCMC political science professor, will analyze the proposal and look at what else voters will decide a year from now.
