Allie Moore was born in 1883 and was an immensely gifted natural athlete who became a national and world roller skating champion after the turn of the century. These championship titles he held for almost a decade. Beginning in 1909, as the world champ on tour, Moore exhibited his astonishing roller skating tricks around the world.

Allie returned to Charlevoix in 1913 to begin leading a colorful and adventuresome life as a swimming and seamanship instructor, a pleasure boat captain as well as a constructor of a series of vessels.  All the while, Moore continued his roller skating exhibits into his middle age, whenever and wherever he was invited.

Join this online presentation by David Miles, curator of the Charlevoix Historical Society Museum, to hear stories of Allie, one of the most colorful, admired, and beloved characters that Charlevoix has ever known. Some of the tales regarding Allie are hilarious.

David L. Miles, curator of the Charlevoix Historical Society’s Museum.

Mr. Miles is the recent recipient of two awards from the State of Michigan for his 2020 book Boulders: The Life and Creations of Earl A. Young in Charlevoix, Michigan, a complete illustrated history of Charlevoix’s world-renowned Mushroom Houses, motels, and the Weathervane Inn restaurant building. The Library of Michigan selected it as one of its twenty Michigan-themed Notable Books of the Year, and the Historical Society of Michigan recently granted Boulders a State History Award 2021 in the Books: Private Printing category.
