Oden State Fish Hatchery
The Oden Fish Hatchery is a must-see cultural treasure of our state. Rearing brown trout and rainbow trout for both inland and Great Lakes waters, the hatchery is the site of the original fish hatchery building which began operations in 1921.
On this guided tour we begin at the back of the property, in the hatchery buildings, located at 8258 South Ayr Rd, in Alanson. In the hatchery buildings we will discuss and possibly witness the actual egg take-in process, which begins the life of the hatchery fish. From there, weather permitting, we will be exploring the grounds through the nature trails and interpretive exhibits and interactive displays. We will visit the brood stock facility of adult brown and rainbow trout, as well as seeing fish swim in the river through the underwater stream chamber. There will be an opportunity for feeding the fish as well. The hatchery is home to many deciduous trees, so expect an enjoyable fall display on the visit. Additional exhibits include the vintage 1914-1935 Wolverine train car and the visitors center. Do not forget to bring a camera on this mile long walk around the facility.
This tour will allow visitors to see why the Michigan Department of Natural Resources mission is to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats, which play such a large part in the success of our environment. Be sure to dress for the weather.
